The DFG and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) have initiated a joint funding program. The NIH-DFG Research Career Transition Awards will enable young scientists to pursue research over a consecutive period of five to six-years, beginning at one of the NIH institutes in the USA and continuing at a German research institution.The first funding phase consists of a minimum of two, maximum three-year stay at one of 17 NIH institutes.

-Postdoctoral researchers who have received their doctorates no later than four years prior to proposal submission are eligible to apply. -Scientists currently working at the NIH are also eligible to apply to the program, provided that they have not been there for more than 24 months. -After that time a proposal can no longer be submitted.
