The Division of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton has world-class research expertise in the field of survey methodology, statistical modelling of complex data, demographic and social policy analysis. The research at the Division was rated excellent in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Demographic research at the Division scored a Grade Point Average of 3 and was ranked third in the country and Statistics group achieved a GPA of 2.75 and was ranked second in the country. The Division has a strong focus on quantitative research methods with application to data from high, middle and low income countries.
-The Social Science academic unit wishes to attract strong, high calibre applicants to their postgraduate programmes in Social Statistics and Demography, potentially leading to MPhil/PhD research. Currently, two scholarships are available for the one-year MSc taught programmes starting in October 2012. – One Home/EU scholarship worth £3,000; and – One International scholarship worth £5,000. – Potential candidates should hold an upper second class honours or a higher degree (or an equivalent international qualification). Preference may be given to those students intending to progress to study at postgraduate research level. – The Home/EU scholarship is available only for students who are either permanent residents or have been residing in the UK or other European Union countries continuously during the last three years until October 2012. – The International scholarship is available for overseas candidates living outside the UK and European Union.
